ALMOST AN HOUR LATER, the police truck rumbled toward the laboratory building while the security guard pressed a hand into Virgil's chest, pinning him against the wall. Virgil's heart raced as the vehicle came to a halt several paces away. On the side of the truck, the Arestia police department's skull-and-spear logo leered at him.

For a moment, the truck was still, and Virgil wondered which officers had come. He couldn’t see through the tinted windows. Then the two front doors swung open.

Kostas and Collias. Virgil’s knees wobbled again, and he only remained standing because of the pressure of the security guard’s hand against his chest.

The officers nodded to the guard as they swaggered toward Virgil. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.” Kostas removed a pair of handcuffs from his belt. “Virgil, you’re under arrest.”
